Design an innovative solution to address a specific problem faced by a target audience.
Designing a tool that helps beginner filmmakers plan and budget their projects with confidence and clarity.
Beginner filmmakers often struggle with organizing production timelines, budgeting accurately, and finding reliable resources. Many have strong creative ideas but lack the tools or experience needed to turn their vision into reality. Mosaic was designed to bridge this gap—offering a streamlined, intuitive platform that not only helps plan and allocate resources, but also prepares users for potential last-minute expenses, ensuring they stay on track.
To better understand the needs of beginner filmmakers, I explored existing reports, articles, and online discussions. I found that many new filmmakers struggle with budgeting, planning, and organizing production logistics. Unexpected costs and overlooked details often cause delays or compromise the quality of their projects. This research helped confirm the need for a tool like Mosaic—one that simplifies project planning and helps users stay prepared throughout the entire filmmaking process.
To gain deeper insight into the filmmaking experience, I supported the interview process by helping conduct conversations with five filmmakers from diverse experience levels. I actively contributed by taking detailed notes, asking follow-up questions to clarify responses, and ensuring participants felt comfortable sharing openly. This collaborative approach enriched the quality of the insights we gathered. During the synthesis phase, I worked closely with my team to analyze the data—sorting, grouping, and identifying key themes that informed the direction of our solution.
Beginner filmmakers often face three main challenges: not knowing where to start, struggling with budgeting, and managing production logistics like permits, locations, and crew. These recurring issues highlight the need for a tool that offers clear guidance, budget support, and organizational structure.
How might we support beginner filmmakers in managing their projects more effectively by simplifying budgeting, organizing logistics, and guiding them through each step of the filmmaking process?
To make sure that the product is useful for the users, I developed a user persona to represent our ideal user. Specifically, Luke, a recent graduate from a film program at Vancouver Film School but does not have a lot of experience doing it entirely on his own and he wants to get into bigger projects.

Developing a Solution
Based on insights from user interviews, I created a user flow map to visualize better understand how filmmakers would navigate the tool. As the planning process contains many steps and can be overwhelming, I focused on flexibility and personalization, breaking down each stage while allowing users to add custom details.
To further support a tailored experience, I designed an onboarding screen that lets users define their preferences and project needs upfront—ensuring the tool adapts to their workflow from the very beginning.

Wireframes
After doing all the research and interviews, I began crafting mid-fidelity wireframes to bring the concept to life. These wireframes focused primarily on the onboarding experience and several other key features central to the user.

Working on Mosaic pushed me to think more critically about the intersection of creativity and structure—especially when designing for a complex, real-world workflow like film production. I strengthened my ability to translate user research into practical design decisions, from mapping out user flows to building an interface that balances flexibility with guidance. This project also helped me grow in system thinking, as I had to consider how different planning elements like budgeting, casting, and scheduling would connect within one cohesive tool. Most importantly, I learned to design with empathy—centering beginner filmmakers' needs while maintaining clarity and usability throughout the experience. I look forward to building on these skills in future projects.
The landing page features a brief introduction to the app, giving users a quick overview of its purpose and value. From there, users are guided into an onboarding process that asks a series of tailored questions to personalize their experience. These questions help us understand where filmmakers are in their journey and what they aim to achieve.
After completing the onboarding process, a tailored list of locations, props, cast and crew will appear based on the choices the film maker made. The user can easily see the relevant locations from the card based design with important details such as rating, distance, and rates.
When the user has selected everything they want, they can use the planner to organize and plan a project. The interface features helpful components for the user to plan such as an overall dashboard detailing the spending on the project and schedules, the ability to divide the project in days, and adding tags to elements so that they may be more organized and streamline the filming process without worrying about the other details.
